About the Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross—also known as the Way of the Cross, Via Crucis, or Way of Sorrows—are a series of images and prayers depicting Jesus Christ on the day of His crucifixion.

The devotion developed from pilgrimages along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, symbolizing the path Christ walked to Calvary. Its purpose is to help the faithful make a spiritual pilgrimage through prayerful contemplation of Christ’s Passion.

Today, it remains one of the most beloved Christian devotions and is practiced in Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, and other Western Christian traditions.
